7 Keys To Walking Closer To God This Christmas

The Christmas season is one of joy, wonder, and celebration, yet it’s also easy to become distracted by the hustle and bustle of shopping, gatherings, and preparations. Amid all this, God invites us to walk closer to Him. Here are seven keys to deepening your relationship with God this Christmas:

1. Rediscover the Story of Christmas

The story of Jesus’ birth is more than a tale; it’s the fulfillment of God’s promise to redeem the world. Take time to read the accounts in Matthew 1-2 and Luke 1-2. Reflect on the faith of Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, and the wise men. Let their responses inspire your own worship and obedience.

2. Embrace a Heart of Worship

Christmas carols are rich with theology and praise. As you sing or listen to them, let the words guide your heart into worship. Take moments throughout your day to thank God for the gift of His Son. Make worship central, not just in church, but in your home and personal time.

3. Prioritize Time with God

Set aside time each day to connect with God through prayer, Bible reading, and reflection. You might follow a Christmas devotional or focus on Scriptures about the birth of Christ. Even 10-15 minutes of focused time can re-center your heart and mind on God’s presence.

4. Give Generously

Christmas reminds us of the greatest gift ever given: Jesus. Reflect that generosity by giving to those in need. This might mean supporting a charity, helping a neighbor, or blessing someone anonymously. Acts of generosity draw us closer to God’s heart and remind us of His abundant love.

5. Practice Gratitude

Amid the flurry of activity, pause to give thanks. Gratitude shifts our focus from what we lack to what God has already provided. Keep a gratitude journal or take a moment each evening to thank God for specific blessings of the day. This practice cultivates a heart tuned to God’s goodness.

6. Simplify and Focus

It’s easy to get caught up in doing too much. Simplify your schedule and focus on what matters most: time with loved ones, meaningful traditions, and worshiping Jesus. Cutting back on unnecessary activities creates space for God to work in your heart.

7. Share the Good News

Christmas is an ideal time to share your faith. Invite someone to a church service, share your testimony over coffee, or simply show Christ’s love through your actions. Being a light to others helps you draw nearer to God and participate in His mission.

Walking closer to God this Christmas doesn’t require a perfect schedule or flawless execution of holiday plans. It simply means prioritizing Him in the midst of it all. As you rediscover the wonder of the Christmas story, worship deeply, give generously, and share His love, you’ll experience the joy and peace that only come from walking closely with the Lord. May this Christmas be your most meaningful yet as you draw near to God.
